the modern condition

I admit defeat: I had hoped to keep my friends and family up to date with the saga that is my life with personal, witty, epistolary gems, but there are simply too few hours in the day even if you live in multiple time zones simultaneously as I do now. So please forgive me if I direct you here to find out the latest on Titus 2.0 and thank you all for your support during what has been a very difficult year.

Almost three months to the day after leaving Discovery I have started a new job. The search process has been by turns terrifying, fascinating, frustrating, futile and then suddenly brought to fruition. It has given me a chance to think about what I want to be when I grow up and to explore some of the what ifs that hum through my mind from time to time.

When I was laid off by Discovery it seemed the decision to move to the US had been a big mistake, but, as Nancy and I have reviewed the information we had at the time and the decisions we made, it is clear that nothing was clear and we made as good a decision as we could in the circumstances. Nancy coined a beautiful aphorism while we were in Tokyo that captures it perfectly:

Hindsight is 50/50

So I have accepted a job with NBC Universal to head their International Digital Content Solutions team with oversight of all projects outside the US: it is a fascinating opportunity as NBC Universal builds its international markets in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. It is a role that will make excellent use of my knowledge of IT systems that bridge international technical and cultural boundaries and my ability to collect airmiles. And it realizes a childhood dream to work in the movies and makes sense of my curious and motley CV.

Although the job reports to the group VP in Universal City it is based in London so Nancy and I are facing another move across the Atlantic: we never imagined our sojourn in DC would be so short lived and are sad to be leaving so soon. But, while logistically challenging, we feel this is an opportunity that cannot be passed up. Exactly how we’ll make it work is a work in progress, so watch this space…
