Warner Again Tops Weekend Box Office, Led by ‘Sinners,’ ‘A Minecraft Movie’

Director Ryan Coogler’s period horror film Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan, remained atop the box office in its second weekend of release with $45 million in ticket sales through April 27, upping the Warner Bros. Pictures release’s two-weekend North American tally past $122 million, $161.6 million globally.

The movie has generated a significant percent of revenue from Imax high-definition screens, much to the delight of Imax CEO Richard Gelfond.

Sinners is taking on the aura of a must-see cultural phenomenon, and the way Imax screens are leading that charge is reminiscent of what we’ve seen with recent cinematic events like Oppenheimer and Dune: Part Two,” Gelfond said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Warner’s reigning No. 1 theatrical release of the year, A Minecraft Movie, added $22.7 million in ticket sales, upping its domestic tally to near $380 million, $816 million worldwide.

Separately, the 20th Anniversary re-release of Disney/Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith sold another $25.2 million in North American tickets, while adding $16.8 million internationally.

The global haul was enough to top the box office bow of Amazon MGM Studios’ The Accountant 2, starring Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal, with $25.2 million in ticket sales. The sequel added $13.7 million in revenue internationally.

Finally, Sony/Screen Gems’ PlayStation-based horror release Until Dawn generated $8 million debut revenue, in addition to $10.1 million internationally.
