20th Century Studios’ ‘Alien: Romulus’ Scores $108.2 Million Global Weekend Box Office Debut

Disney-owned 20th Century Studios’ latest installment in the “Alien” sci-fi horror franchise, Alien: Romulus, generated $108.2 million in estimated global ticket sales, including $41.5 million in ticket sales across North American screens, to easily top the weekend box office through Aug. 18.
The seventh movie in the franchise that started in 1979 is directed by Fede Álvarez and stars Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux and Isabela Merced.
The film beat a strong sophomore weekend performance for Blake Lively’s romantic drama It Ends With Us, which sold another $33.1 million in tickets to ups it global haul to $180 million after 10 days of release. The movie ranks as the year’s highest grossing non-sequel title in its first seven days of release, a indicator of its appeal. Repeat moviegoers are overindexing comps and have become a higher portion of the daily audience, according to Sony.
Rounding out the weekend box office podium was Marvel Studios’ superhero actioner Deadpool & Wolverine, co-starring Lively’s husband Ryan Reynolds. It added $29 million to up its global haul to $1.14 billion after only four weekends. The film, co-starring Hugh Jackman, is now the highest-grossing ‘R’-rated movie of all time — topping 2019’s Joker.
Universal Pictures’ Twisters added $9.8 million to finish at No. 4 for the weekend and upping its North American tally to $238.4 million.
Fathom Events’ 15th anniversary re-release of the animated Coraline generated $8.4 million over the weekend. When combined with the $2.9 million earned in Thursday sneak screenings, the animated movie saw $11.3 million in revenue across the four-day period.
Elsewhere, Lionsgate’s Borderlands took in an estimated $2.35 million for the weekend for a North American total of $13.54 million after two weekends. The film stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, Ariana Greenblatt and Florian Munbteanu. Directed by Eli Roth from a screenplay by Eli Roth and Joe Crombie and a screen story by Eli Roth, the film is based on the “Borderlands” video game franchise.
