‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ Tops April Disc Sales, ‘Wicked’ Still No. 1 for 2025
May 12, 2025
Paramount Home Entertainment’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was No. 1 on the top 10 list of physical-media sales for April 2025, according to Circana’s VideoScan tracking service that compiles DVD and Blu-ray transactions.
The latest sequel based on the Sega video game series finds Sonic and friends clashing with Shadow the Hedgehog, while Dr. Robotnik teams with his long-lost grandfather to deploy a superweapon against the Earth. The film was released on disc April 15 and topped the weekly sales chart its first three weeks.
April’s No. 2 seller was Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King. The prequel to 2019’s The Lion King tells the story of how Mufasa came to become king of the Pridelands, alienating his adoptive brother Scar. It was released on disc April 1 and was the top weekly seller for two weeks.
No. 3 was another April 1 disc release, Universal Pictures’ Dog Man. The DreamWorks Animation film adapts the Dav Pilkey books about a police dog and his human police officer partner who are fused together into a new superhero after being injured on the job.
No. 4 was Disney’s Moana 2, which had been the No. 2 seller in March. The animated film, a sequel to 2016’s Moana, finds the title character on a mission to free the oceans from a vengeful deity in order to reunite long-lost seafaring civilizations.
Lionsgate’s Flight Risk, also an April 1 disc release, took No. 5. The thriller is directed by Mel Gibson and stars Mark Wahlberg as a pilot transporting an Air Marshal (Michelle Dockery) accompanying a witness (Topher Grace) for a mob trial. As they cross the Alaskan wilderness, tensions soar and trust is tested, as not everyone on board is who they seem.

Universal’s Wicked, which was No. 3 in March, was No. 6 in April and remained the top seller for the year to date. Based on the first half of the hit Broadway musical of the same name, the film serves as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz about the rise to power of Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba, who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West.
The top seller from March, Paramount’s Gladiator II, slipped to No. 7 in April. Director Ridley Scott’s sword-and-sandals sequel tells a new story of a soldier-turned-slave seeking revenge against the rulers of the Roman Empire.
Rounding out the month’s top 10 were Warner’s Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League, an April 15 disc release, at No. 8; Sony Pictures’ Heart Eyes, also on disc April 15, at No. 9; and Disney’s April 22 4K Steelbook release of 1993’s Tombstone at No. 10.
On the year-to-date disc sales chart, the top three remained Wicked at No. 1, Venom: The Last Dance at No. 2, and Nosferatu at No. 3.
Moana 2 moved up a spot to No. 4, pushing Gladiator II down to No. 5.
The two top April releases also joined the year’s top 10, with Sonic 3 at No. 6 and Mufasa at No. 10.
Mubi’s The Substance, Universal’s The Wild Robot and Warner’s Red One each dropped down a spot on the year-to-date chart to No. 7, No. 8 and No. 9, respectively.
Falling out the year’s top 10 were Sony Pictures’ Kraven the Hunter and Universal’s Twisters.
