‘Dog Man’ Tops Second Weekend Box Office Despite Subpar Ticket Sales
February 9, 2025
DreamWorks Animation’s Dog Man finished No. 1 in its second weekend at the box office through Feb. 9, with the competing TV juggernaut — Super Bowl LIX — likely contributing to ticket sales falling below expectations at a projected $13.7 million — more than 60% below last weekend’s debut. Some estimates had the film selling $16.3 million in tickets.
Featuring the voice of Pete Davidson, the movie has generated $66 million globally, including more than $54 million across North American screens.
The weekend’s two new releases rounded out the soft podium with Sony/Screen Gems’ Valentine’s Day-themed horror story Heart Eyes generating a projected $8.5 million — on par with industry estimates. Universal’s Love Hurts, led by Oscar-winners Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Ariana DeBose (West Side Story), sold $5.8 million in tickets — almost $1 million below some estimates. With strong reviews (certified fresh 82% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes) plus momentum heading into Valentine’s Day and the President’s Day holiday weekend, the studio believes the ‘R’-rated Heart Eyes is well-positioned for a long theatrical run.
Comscore reports weekend box office revenue should reach $59 million, the biggest Super Bowl box office in the post-COVID era. The lowest tally remains with last year’s $38.9 million dud featuring Universal’s Argylle and Focus Features’ Lisa Frankenstein.
Meanwhile, Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 grossed an estimated $1.75 million across North American screens, adding $4.5 million internationally to up its global tally to almost $472 million.
Sony/TriStar Pictures’ adult comedy One of Them Days made a projected $3 million for the weekend, bringing its total North American gross to $39.4 million through four weekends.
Lionsgate’s Flight Risk, starring Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Dockery, sold another $2.6 million in projected ticket sales, upping its three-week tally to $25.2 million. The studio’s Den of Thieves: Pantera added $600,000 to up its global tally to $53.3 million.
