‘Dog Man’ Expected to Remain Atop Slow Super Bowl Weekend Box Office

With more than 100 million Americans expected to watch/stream Super Bowl LIX from the Superdome in New Orleans on Feb. 9, the theatrical market is projected to take a hit.

As a result, last weekend’s No. 1 movie, DreamWorks Animation’s Dog Man, is expected to repeat in the top spot with $16.3 million in ticket sales through Sunday, according to estimates from BoxOfficeReport.com.

Featuring the voice of Pete Davidson, Dog Man should easily best new lower-budget releases: ‘R’-rated horror film Heart Eyes ($8.2 million) from Sony/Screen Gems, and Universal Pictures’ ‘R’-rated action comedy Love Hurts ($6.7 million), starring Oscar winners Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Ariana DeBose (West Side Story).

Disney’s enduring Mufasa: The Lion King should add $4.5 million in ticket sales, upping its North American total to $236 million after eight weekends.

Warner/New Line Cinema’s Companion is expected to sell another $4 million in second-weekend ticket sales, followed by Sony/TriStar’s comedy One of Them Days ($3.8 million), Lionsgate’s Flight Risk ($2.6 million), Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 ($2 million), and Disney’s Moana 2 ($1.9 million).
