The landmark 1971 giallo film The Black Belly of the Tarantula will be released May 12 in a limited-edition three-disc 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Disc set available exclusively through the Celluloid Dreams website.

In the film, known as La Tarantola dal Ventre Nero in its native Italian, a serial killer has Rome on edge, paralyzing his victims before slicing them open before their own eyes. Conflicted, burned-out and feeling overwhelmed, Inspector Tellini (Giancarlo Giannini) must find the madman before he claims another victim in a case that edges closer and closer to his personal life. The cast also includes Claudine Auger, Barbara Bouchet and Rossella Falk.

The collection offers the film with a new 4K transfer, newly remastered and restored in-house at Celluloid Dreams, taken from the original camera negatives and presented on both 4K Ultra HD and regular Blu-ray discs for the first time in its original full-frame aspect ratio. The limited edition comes in a side-loaded slipcase that also contains a set of 16 publicity photo reprints and an 80-page full-color booklet with an essay by James Branscome (Cinematic Void), an essay by JA Kerswell, and a collection of Then/Now location photographs by Andrea Girolami.

As usual for Celluloid Dreams, orders placed through the company’s website will also come with an exclusive set of restored 12 x 8.25-inch color reproductions of the original Italian lobby cards, while supplies last.

The first disc in the set is a 4K disc containing the film with the new 4K restoration in HDR-10, while disc two is a regular Blu-ray Disc of the film with the 4K remaster.

Both discs include a new commentary by film critic Guido Henkel; the English trailer in 4K; the German trailer; an English double-feature TV spot; “The World of Paolo Cavara,” a new interview with director Paolo Cavara’s son, Pietro Cavara; “Made-up Words,” a new interview with soprano Edda Dell’Orso; an archival Interview with producer Marcello Danon’s son, Lorenzo Danon; an archival interview with director Paolo Cavara’s son, Pietro Cavara; “What a Tangled Web We Weave,” a new video essay by Andy Marshall-Roberts; “The Uncanny Peephole,” a new video essay by Howard S. Berger; and an image gallery.

The third disc is a regular Blu-ray Disc containing an international version of the film from a newly restored 4K master, and a Grindhouse version newly restored from a 35mm theatrical print.

Due to shipping limitations, Celluloid Dreams is partnering with DiabolikDVD.com to make the set available to international customers.
