Tennis-Themed Romance ‘Challengers’ Tops Slow Weekend Box Office With $15 Million
April 28, 2024
Amazon MGM Studios’ tennis-themed romance drama Challengers topped the weekend box office with $15 million in ticket sales in its debut through April 28. The ‘R’-rated film, which is headlined by Dune and “Euphoria” star Zendaya, carries a reported $55 million production cost.
The tally was enough to easily beat Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Co.’s latest joint release Unsung Hero, which took in an estimated $7.75 million across 2,832 North American screens, outperforming its pre-weekend tracking of $5 million-$7 million — and $6 million production budget. The faith-based film, about a musical Australian family that moves to the United States searching for a brighter future, is the latest collaboration from Kingdom and Lionsgate following last year’s Jesus Revolution and the companies’ most recent release, Ordinary Angels.
Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Entertainment’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the latest release in the theatrical monster clash franchise, generated $7.2 million in revenue to land at No. 3 for the weekend, upping its North American tally past $181 million and to more than $495 million globally.

A24’s politically-charged Civil War added $7 million in ticket sales to push its North American tally past $56 million and $71 million worldwide. Universal Pictures’ Abigail, the partial reimagining of the studio’s 1936 horror film Dracula’s Daughter, sold another $5.2 million to push its tally near $19 million after its second weekend.
