Netflix on Dec. 12 disclosed that 60% of its 223 million global subscribers (134 million) regularly watch original South Korean content, including recent hits “All of Us Are Dead,” “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” and season one of “Squid Game,” the latter the streamer’s most-viewed series ever.
Netflix announced the statistic in conjunction with news of its new original romance series “Doona!,” starring former K-pop star Bae Suzy and Yang Se-jong, and directed by Lee Jung-hyo.
Specifically, the streamer’s Korean content has regularly made Netflix’s top 10 series list across 90 countries this year, with “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” viewed for 657 million hours over 20 weeks. “Squid Game” holds the record with 2.3 billion hours viewed across 20 weeks. “All of Us Are Dead” generated around 660 million hours in 10 weeks.
The Asian market continues to generate the majority of Netflix’s subscriber growth. The region added 1.43 million net new subs in the most-recent fiscal period. That compares with 570,000 new subs in Europe/Middle East, 310,000 additional subs in Latin America and 100,000 subs in North America.
