83rd Golden Globe Nominations Led by ‘One Battle After Another’ in Movie Categories, ‘White Lotus’ for TV

The contenders for the 83rd Golden Globes were announced Dec. 8, with Warner’s One Battle After Another leading the film categories with nine nominations, while season three of HBO’s “The White Lotus” led the TV categories with six noms.

One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a paranoid former left-wing revolutionary, grabbed nominations for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, Best Actor for DiCaprio, Best Actress for Chase Infiniti, Best Supporting Actress for Teyana Taylor and Best Supporting Actor for Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro, while Paul Thomas Anderson earned nominations for Best Director and Best Screenplay, and Jonny Greenwood was nominated for Best Original Score. The film is currently available for digital purchase and rental, and arrives on disc Jan. 20.

The other nominees for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy include Blue Moon, Bugonia, Marty Supreme, No Other Choice and Nouvelle Vague.

Bugonia also earned nominations for Best Actress for Emma Stone, and Best Actor for Jesse Plemons. The film is currently available digitally from Universal, and arrives on disc Dec. 23.

Nominees for Best Motion Picture — Drama include Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, Hamnet, It Was Just an Accident, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value and Sinners.

Sentimental Value earned eight total nominations, also grabbing Best Motion Picture — Non-English Language, Best Actress for Renate Reinsve, Best Supporting Actress for Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Best Supporting Actor for Stellan Skarsgård, as well as Best Director and Best Screenplay for Joachim Trier.

Michael B. Jordan in ‘Sinners’

Sinners, which is available from Warner on disc and for digital purchase and rental, and to stream on HBO Max, earned seven noms, including Michael B. Jordan for Best Actor, Ryan Coogler for Best Director and Best Screenplay, Ludwig Göransson for Best Original Score, and “I Lied to You” for Best Original Song. It was also the only film of the 10 Best Picture nominees to also be nominated for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. 

The other nominees for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, a relatively new category that seeks to balance artistic merit with popularity, include F1: The Movie (available on disc and digitally from Warner, and to stream on Apple TV); Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters; Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (available on disc and digitally, and to stream on Paramount+); Warner’s Weapons (available on disc and digitally, and to stream on HBO Max); two movies currently in theaters, Universal’s Wicked: For Good and Disney’s Zootopia 2; and Avatar: Fire and Ash, which arrives in theaters Dec. 19 from Disney.

Zootopia 2 and KPop Demon Hunters were also among the nominees for Best Motion Picture — Animated, alongside Disney-owned Pixar’s Elio, Sony Pictures’ Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle, and the French films Arco and Little Amélie or the Character of Rain.

KPop Demon Hunters also garnered a nomination for Best Original Song for “Golden,” bringing the film’s tally to three noms.

Frankenstein’s five total nominations also added to Netflix’s haul, including Oscar Isaac for Best Actor, Jacob Elordi for Best Supporting Actor, Alexandre Desplat for Best Original Score, and del Toro for Best Director.

On the television side, nominees for Best Television Series — Drama include season three of “The White Lotus,” available on HBO Max and recently released on DVD; season one of “The Pitt,” also on HBO Max; season three of “The Diplomat” on Netflix; and three Apple TV series: “Pluribus,” currently in the midst of its first season; season two of “Severance”; and season five of “Slow Horses.”

Additional nominations for “White Lotus” include Best Supporting Actor for Walton Goggins and Jason Isaacs, and Best Supporting Actress for Carrie Coon, Parker Posey and Aimee Lou Wood.

The nominees for Best Television Series — Musical or Comedy are seasons 4-5 of ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” season four of FX on Hulu’s “The Bear,” season four of HBO Max’s “Hacks,” season two of Netflix’s “Nobody Wants This,” season five of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” and season one of Apple TV’s “The Studio.”

Best Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television nominees include Netflix’s Adolescence, The Beast in Me and the seventh season of “Black Mirror”; Peacock’s All Her Fault; FX on Hulu’s Dying for Sex; and Prime Video’s The Girlfriend.

Winners of the 83rd Golden Globes will be announced Sunday, Jan. 11. The ceremony begins at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET and will air live on CBS and stream on Paramount+, hosted by Nikki Glaser.
