Survival Thriller ‘Send Help’ Expected to Remain Atop Slow Super Bowl Weekend Box Office

Disney-owned 20th Century Studios’ thriller Send Help, directed by Sam Raimi and starring Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien, is projected to remain No. 1 over the sluggish Super Bowl-impacted weekend box office through Feb. 8.

The workplace harassment-turned-jungle survival storyline is expected to generate $9.2 million in second-weekend ticket sales, according to estimates from Box Office Report.com.

Last weekend’s indie sleeper Iron Lung is projected to finish a close No. 2 with a projected $8.8 million in revenue, upping its tally to near $34 million.

The Super Bowl isn’t keeping studios from bowing four new releases, including Bleecker Street/Crosswalk’s K-pop stadium tour documentary Stray Kids: The dominATE Experience with $6.7 million in projected ticket sales; Angel Studios’ romance Solo Mio ($6.5 million); Lionsgate’s The Strangers: Chapter 3 ($5.5 million); and Vertical Entertainment’s Dracula ($4.5 million). Dracula is currently available across digital retail channels in the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, returning box office releases will be spearheaded by Disney’s Zootopia 2 (projected $4 million), which hit digital retail platforms Jan. 27, and Amazon MGM Studios’ First Lady doc Melania with a projected $3.8 million in second-weekend ticket sales.

Disney and 20th Century’s Avatar: Fire and Ash is expected to add $3.4 million in eighth-weekend ticket sales, followed by Black Bear’s Jason Statham actioner Shelter ($2.6 million).
