Sony Pictures’ ‘The Equalizer 3’ Looks to Dominate Labor Day Weekend Box Office
September 1, 2023
Sony Pictures’ third installment in the “Equalizer” action franchise appears to be a lock to command the top spot in theatrical box office weekend take through Labor Day Sept. 4.
Again led by Denzel Washington in the title role, The Equalizer 3 is projected to tally from $31 million to $40 million in North American revenue over the four-day holiday weekend, according to data from Box Office Pro. That would top the previous two editions’ opening weekend box office tallies of $34.1 million and $36 million, respectively.
The Equalizer 3 generated $3.8 million in special Thursday screenings.
The tally should be enough to best the blockbuster Barbie, which is projected to add another $11 million in ticket sales to help the Warner Bros. Pictures’ title become the year’s No. 1 box office release worldwide.
Rounding out the podium could be Warner’s latest DC Comics superhero feature Blue Beetle, which is projected to add $7.5 million in revenue. That’s enough to hold off the summer’s other overachiever, Universal Pictures’ Oppenheimer, with $7 million in additional revenue. The Christopher Nolan-directed biopic on the father of the atomic bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer, received a boost internationally when the movie was released to strong sales in China.
Returning movies include Sony’s video-game inspired Gran Turismo, with a projected $6.5 million in sophomore weekend ticket sales, followed by Paramount Pictures’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, with a projected $4.5 million. The latter film became available for digital purchase and rental Sept. 1.
