Paramount Pictures Top-Grossing Theatrical Studio Halfway Through 2022
July 4, 2022
Paramount Pictures ended the halfway point of 2022 as the top-grossing movie producer.
Thanks to the enduring box office appeal of Tom Cruise’s fighter jet sequel Top Gun: Maverick and video game adaptation Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Paramount is the lone domestic studio to break $1 billion in revenue via eight theatrical releases through July 1. Maverick has topped $564 million at North American screens, and $1 billion globally, with Sonic 2 adding $191 million domestically.
Disney (Pixar Animation, Marvel Studios, 20th Century Studios, Lucasfilm and Searchlight Pictures) is in second with $636.5 million, followed by Warner Bros. Pictures at $544 million.
Universal Pictures’ half-year tally was driven by Jurassic World: Dominion ($335.3 million) and The Bad Guys ($100 million), with Sony Pictures’ revenue largely driven by 2021 holdover Spider-Man: No Way Home, Uncharted and Father Stu.
Universal looks to make run for the pole position following the strong debut of Minions: The Rise of Gru, which tracked more than $108 million through July 3.
