Warner Bros. Discovery Reports Record TV, Streaming Viewership for Paris Olympics

Warner Bros. Discovery Aug. 12 reported record viewership and engagement across all its platforms — including free-to-air, pay-TV, Max and Discovery+, Web and social — during the just-concluded Paris Olympics.

Spurred by the recent launch of the Max streaming service in 25 European markets, the Paris Games marked the first real “streaming Olympics” across Europe.

WBD, which held exclusive Olympics distribution rights across Europe for the first time, recorded a cumulative reach of more than 215 million viewers on its platforms, up 23% from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics held in 2021.

More than 7 billion minutes were streamed over the course of the Games — six times more than the Tokyo Games.

WBD recorded a record 600 million minutes streamed in a single day (Aug. 4) by Max and Discovery+ subscribers. The day featured the Men’s 100m final, the Novak Djokovic vs. Carlos Alcaraz men’s tennis gold medal match, the final day of swimming events and the women’s road race in cycling.

WBD reported that there were four times as many unique streaming viewers on its platforms, including Max and Discovery+, throughout the Games compared to the last summer Olympics.

Paid streaming subscribers exceeded those for the entire Tokyo Games after four days of competition (July 27-30), with new subs increasing 77% from the Tokyo Games.

“Paris 2024 has exceeded all expectations for fans and audiences, and for Max and Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming business,” JB Perrette, CEO of global streaming and games for WBD, said in a statement.
