Misunderstandings and patterns of dishonesty intertwine the fates of two couples in the farcical Splitsville, a throwback to the screwball relationship comedies of the 1960s and ’70s, modernized with 21st-century sensibilities about sex and marriage.
The story begins with Ashley (Adria Arjona of “Andor”) confessing to her new husband Carey (Kyle Marvin, who also co-wrote the screenplay) that she has cheated on him multiple times and wants a divorce, prompting him to retreat to the beach house of his best friend Paul (Michael Angelo Covino, the other co-writer, who also directs the film). While discussing Carey’s situation, Paul and his wife, Julie (Dakota Johnson), tell him that they agreed to be in an open marriage, which intrigues Carey. Paul soon leaves on what he calls a business trip, but Julie believes it’s an excuse for him to visit a mistress in the city. She promptly has sex with Carey, who confesses the act to Paul upon his return, leading to an over-the-top brawl that trashes the house.
Carey then returns to Ashley and suggests they enter an open marriage as an alternative to a messy divorce, and she agrees. Carey, however, takes the arrangement to the next level, turning their home into a sort of halfway house for her ever-increasing string of lovers as he invites them to live with them after Ashley moves on to the next one. Paul soon arrives to stay with them as well, explaining that Julie has kicked him out and he needs Carey’s help to win her back.
Carey and Julie, however, realize they actually have feelings for each other and begin dating, a situation further complicated by Paul’s impending arrest for financial fraud.
Sometimes violent, frequently irreverent and routinely hilarious, Splitsville excels at pushing its characters into absurdist situations that allow the cast to shine. Splitsville also flips the trope of gratuitous nudity often found in sex comedies, as Kyle Marvin as Carey is put on full display several times throughout the film, while the women mostly get to stay covered up.
The Blu-ray includes a seven-minute behind-the-scenes featurette that offers some interesting tidbits, plus the film’s trailer and two TV spots.
