In Force: Five, available on Blu-ray Disc, a powerful and dangerous cult, hidden on a remote island fortress, has brainwashed the daughter of a U.S. senator. With local authorities powerless and time running out, the government turns to a highly specialized team of martial arts experts known as “Force: Five.” Led by seasoned agent Jim Martin, the team includes five elite fighters, each with unique combat skills — from unarmed street-fighting and karate to high-impact kickboxing. Their mission: infiltrate the island compound, uncover the secrets of the cult’s charismatic and manipulative leader, and rescue the senator’s daughter before she becomes permanently indoctrinated — or worse. From writer-director Robert Clouse, the auteur of Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon and Jackie Chan’s The Big Brawl, the film features a diverse cast of martial arts legends, including Joe Lewis (Bloodfight 2: The Deathcage), Bong Soo Han (Kill the Golden Goose), Sonny Barnes (Black Belt Jones), Benny “The Jet” Urquidez (Dragons Forever) and Richard Norton (Mad Max: Fury Road), as well as Amanda Wyss (A Nightmare on Elm Street). Hong Kong Action Fantasy ‘Saga of the Phoenix’ Due on Blu-ray Dec. 16 From MVD and 88 Films

The 1989 Hong Kong action fantasy Saga of the Phoenix will be released on Blu-ray Disc Dec. 16 from MVD Entertainment Group and 88 Films.

Set in a world where the boundaries between mysticism and mortality blur, Saga of the Phoenix tells the story of a young novice nun, Peacock (Gloria Yip), whose journey of spiritual devotion is suddenly disrupted when dark forces rise to threaten the land. After accidentally unleashing a malevolent demon during a ritual gone wrong, Peacock finds herself swept into an adventure far beyond the monastery walls. She joins forces with Master Peacock (Yuen Biao, one of Hong Kong cinema’s “Three Dragons” martial arts stars alongside Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung), a monk of great skill and wisdom, as well as a ragtag group of eccentric allies, including the quirky Taoist priest Ji Gong (Hiroshi Mikami), whose unorthodox methods often provide comic relief amid the chaos. Together, they must battle supernatural creatures, fend off bizarre assassins, and decipher the prophecy that foretells the world’s salvation or destruction.

As the journey unfolds, the group traverses landscapes filled with enchantment and terror — confronting living statues, sinister apparitions, and sorcery that tests the limits of their courage and faith. At its heart, the film blends slapstick humor with high-flying martial arts choreography, dazzling practical effects, and a touch of spiritual allegory.

Special features include a limited edition slip case with new artwork by R.P “Kung Fu Bob” OBrien; a limited edition 40-page bound book; a limited edition artcard; audio commentary by Frank Djeng (NY Asian Film Festival) and F.J. Desanto; alternate Japanese footage; an image gallery; and the film’s original trailer.

1994 Denise Richards-Paul Walker Horror-Comedy ‘Tammy and the T-Rex’ Among Titles Due on DVD From MVD Visual Label July 15

Two schlock horror films — Tammy and the T-Rex and Hard Rock Zombies — join the buddy comedy Sidekicks on the July 15 DVD slate from MVD Entertainment Group’s MVD Visual label.

Tammy and the T-Rex (1994) asks, “What do you do when you wake up and discover you’ve become a Tyrannosaurus rex?” In the film, all Michael (Paul Walker, The Fast and the Furious) previously thought about was getting a date with Tammy (Denise Richards, Wild Things). Now he has to be careful not to flatten the town just by walking through it. But his biggest problem is hiding his three-ton prehistoric body from a mad scientist (Terry Kiser, Weekend at Bernie’s) who wants to make him extinct. The film is presented unrated for the first time in all of its gory glory. Originally filmed as an ‘R’-rated comedy horror flick, its gore scenes were removed from the initial American release in order to appeal to families. This version restores these gore scenes from writer, director and cult movie legend Stuart Raffill (Mac & Me, Passenger 57, The Ice Pirates). The film also features special effects/makeup by the legendary John Carl Buechler (Re-Animator, Nightmare on Elm Street 4, Friday the 13th: Part VII, Hatchet, From Beyond and many more).

Hard Rock Zombies (1985) is an outlandish thriller that melds the rock beat and stunning visuals of the likes of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” with the campy horror/comedy of such cult classics as The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Bloodsucking Freaks. The film follows Holy Moses, which is a hot young rock band on the cusp of stardom. They journey to a secluded Northern California hamlet to perform what is touted as the gig that will propel them to stardom. Instead, it’s the beginning of a remarkably macabre adventure. The band is taken captive by a strange family and subjected to unimaginable horrors before being brutally slaughtered. But the fun begins when they are resurrected and become hard rock zombies and rock ‘n’ roll their way to vengeance in an all-out attack on the crazed clan. The film also features special effects/makeup by Buechler. Written and directed by Krishna Shah, Hard Rock Zombies was shot in 1983 at the same time as Shah’s American Drive-In and was featured as the drive-in movie within that film. The film was originally released by the legendary Cannon Films, a beloved brand on video store shelves in the 1980s.

In the 1992 action comedy Sidekicks, daydreams turn to reality when Barry’s fantasy hero comes to his real-life rescue. Barry (Jonathan Brandis, Ladybugs) lives in a world of fantasy, where he imagines himself the trusty sidekick of action superstar Chuck Norris (Missing in Action).Together, they engage in martial arts mayhem, vanquishing every foolhardy enemy that dares to take them on. Unfortunately, in the real world, Barry is no hero. The other kids taunt him and call him a geek. Barry’s father (Beau Bridges, The Fabulous Baker Boys) suggests karate lessons. After rejecting the abusive techniques of teacher Kelly Stone (Joe Piscopo, Dead Heat), they find Mr. Lee (Mako, Conan The Barbarian), a kindly old gentleman with an awesome knowledge of martial arts who takes Barry under his wing. Slowly, Barry learns to build his confidence and strength. One day he gets the surprise of his life when he fends off the school’s biggest bully in a schoolyard fight. But a bigger battle awaits. Challenged to a competition in the state karate championships, Barry finds he needs a partner to compete. The real-life fantasy begins as the champion comes to the aid of the dreamer, and together they become an unbeatable team. From producer Don Carmody (Porky’s, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Silent Hill, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day), Sidekicks debuted at No. 2 at the box office and grossed $17,180,393 during its domestic release.
