A deft blend of silly humor that should appeal to kids and adult-friendly sophisticated storytelling, the sequel to 2016’s Zootopia delves into a Chinatown-esque conspiracy involving the history of the animal-populated title city and why there aren’t many reptiles around.

Picking up from the events of the first movie, Zootopia 2 finds rabbit Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and former con artist fox Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) now partners in the Zootopia Police Department. When their attempt to bust a big smuggling case goes awry, they get assigned to counseling to work out their differences, but Judy recovers evidence that a reptile might be involved.

She and Nick go undercover at a gala celebrating the 100th anniversary of the technology that regulates the city’s weather so all the different species can live comfortably together. They soon encounter a snake, the first one seen in the city in a century, who steals the original notebook containing the plans for the weather regulator, running afoul of the lynx family descendants of the inventor who patented the device.

When the snake, Gary (Ke Huy Quan), claims the journal holds the key to reversing a great injustice involving the snakes, Judy and Nick decide to help him, disobeying orders in their effort to uncover the truth while being branded fugitives.

While pursuing another message of togetherness similar to the first film, the lively Zootopia 2 is also loaded with crazy action sequnces and filled with fun references to previous Disney animal-related classics.

As to a 4K home release of Zootopia 2, while Disney made it available on 4K through digital retailers, the studio announced the only way to get the film on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc is through a limited-edition Steelbook release that is apparently in such low supply that Amazon took down its listing page for it, and other online retailers offering it have preorders listed as sold out.

Disney Tops 2025 Global Box Office With $6 Billion in Revenue, Down 85% From Studio’s Record Pre-Pandemic 2019 Box Office

Walt Disney Studios is ending 2025 as the only Hollywood studio to reach $6 billion in global ticket sales, which it achieved from 16 wide releases, driven largely by animated hits and Marvel releases.

The tally is the highest box office gross since the pandemic, but is still down 85% from Disney’s record $11.1 billion revenue haul in 2019, which was led by No. 2 all-time theatrical release Avengers: Endgame with $2.79 billion in global ticket sales.

The box office comes as Disney-owned 20th Century Studios’ Avatar: Fire and Ash topped $450 million in worldwide revenue after five days of release. Other Disney studios included in the totals are Pixar Animation, Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm, among others.

Disney’s top performing theatrical releases this year included Zootopia 2 with $1.3 billion in revenue; Lilo & Stitch ($1.03 billion); The Fantastic Four: First Steps ($522 million); Captain America: Brave New World ($415 million); Thunderbolts* ($382 million); Snow White ($205 million); Predator: Badlands ($182 million); Elio ($154 million); and Freakier Friday with $153 million in ticket sales.

Lower-grossing re-releases of Toy Story ($11 million) and Princess Mononoke ($11 million) also contributed.

In 2019, Disney recorded a record seven movies (Avengers: Endgame, The Lion King, Frozen II, Captain Marvel, Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker, Toy Story 4 and Aladdin) that each topped $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales. Lower earners such as Ford v Ferrari ($225 million) and Ad Astra ($133 million) from the before the acquisition of 20th Century Fox (now 20th Century Studios) also contributed to the overall total.

‘Zootopia 2’ Tops Weekend Box Office, Hitting $1.14 Billion at Global Box Office in 20 Days

Disney Animation’s Zootopia 2 continues to resonate with moviegoers worldwide, adding $131.1 million in revenue internationally (led by China), and $26.3 million in ticket sales across North American screens during the weekend through Dec. 14.

The sequel has grossed $1.137 billion in global revenue after 20 days to become the No. 1 grossing North American movie in 2025. China’s animated sequel Ne Zha 2 remains the year’s top-grossing theatrical release at $1.9 billion.

Still, Disney-owned 20th Century Studios’ third installment in the “Avatar” franchise, Avatar: Fire and Ash, looms. It bows in theaters on Dec. 19 and is looking to surpass $2 billion at the global box office as both its predecessors have.

Meanwhile, coming in at No. 2 in North America over the weekend was the Universal/Blumhouse sequel Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. The tally was a 70% drop from its $63 million opening weekend through Dec. 7.

Universal’s musical follow-up Wicked: For Good was No. 3 with $8.5 million, upping its global haul past $460 million.

The new release political dramedy Ella McCay from 20th Century Studios, starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Emma Mackey, Julie Kavner, Ayo Adebiri, Woody Harrelson and Rebecca Hall, and directed by James L. Brooks, stumbled out of the gate with $2.1 million.

David A. Gross with industry newsletter FranchiseRE, characterized the movie’s debut as a weak opening for a comedy drama. It didn’t help that the critics’ reviews are poor, with a lukewarm theatrical audience score (‘B-‘ CinemaScore).

“Political and family stories are not strong performers overseas; each culture has its own experience of these themes,” Gross wrote in a post. “An American story like this is not an easy sell.”

Paramount’s reboot of The Running Man, which is expected to hit digital retail platforms this coming week, added $430,000 in North American ticket sales, upping its total to $37.6 million. The Glen Powell-starrer saw another $1.1 million in international revenue, upping its foreign tally to $30.8 million, to give it $68.4 million globally.

Lionsgate’s release of Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair added $810,000 in its second weekend of release, upping the movie’s 10-day tally to $5.5 million. The studio’s Now You See Me: Now You Don’t saw another $2.4 million to up its domestic total to $59.3 million.

Cineverse’s critically acclaimed reboot of the 1984 Christmas horror slasher film Silent Night, Deadly Night sold an estimated $1.1 million in North American ticket sales — well below some estimates of around $2.1 million.

Disney’s ‘Zootopia 2’ Expected Back Atop Weekend Box Office After ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ Detour

Walt Disney Animation’s Zootopia 2 is projected return atop the weekend box office in its third weekend of release with $28.5 million in estimated North American ticket sales through Dec. 14, according to estimates from BoxOfficeReport.com. The tally is projected to push Zootopia 2 past the $1 billion global box office.

The movie briefly dropped to No. 2 last weekend, replaced by Universal’s Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, which is projected to finish runner-up this weekend with an estimated 69% revenue drop to $20 million.

Freddy’s 2 could still have a better second weekend box office than the 2023 original, which was released concurrently on the Peacock streaming service.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 should experience a sharp [box office] decline due to the immense rush-out of the film’s built-in fanbase last weekend,” analyst Daniel Garris wrote in a post.

Rounding out the weekend podium is expected to be Universal’s musical Wicked: For Good, which saw a near 72% freefall in tickets sold in its third weekend (ended Dec. 7). The revenue decline should stabilize somewhat this weekend to $8 million in revenue, upping the movie’s domestic gross past $311 million.

The weekend also features three new releases led by 20th Century Studios’ Ella McCay, Universal’s 25th Anniversary re-release of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Cineverse/Iconic Events Releasing’s reboot of Silent Night, Deadly Night. BoxOfficeReport is predicting weekend grosses of $3.1 million for Ella McCay, $2.6 million for How the Grinch Stole Christmas and $2.1 million for Silent Night, Deadly Night, respectively.

Disney’s ‘Zootopia 2’ Generates Massive $556 Million Global Thanksgiving Weekend Box Office Debut

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Zootopia 2 lived up to the hype, generating a massive $556 million in global ticket sales across the extended Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 26-30), including $156 million across North American screens.

The movie, featuring voice actors Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman and Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan, among others, was a big hit internationally, generating $400 million in revenue, including a record $272 million across Chinese screens.

“China has been trouble for American films during the last five years — very little has worked there — but the opening is breaking records. The film is on track to gross more money in China than in the U.S.,” analyst David A. Gross with industry newsletter FranchiseRE wrote in a post.

The original Zootopia opened March 4-6, 2016, to $75 million in North American revenue, en route to more than $1 billion at the global box office.

“The incredible response to Zootopia 2 reflects both its worldwide appeal and the remarkable work of our filmmakers and cast,” Alan Bergman, co-chairman at Disney Entertainment, said in a statement. “It’s a proud moment for Disney Animation and all of us at Disney, not to mention a great way to start the holiday season.”

Last weekend’s box office No. 1, Universal Pictures’ Wicked: For Good, added $93 million in second-weekend ticket sales, upping its 10-day North American tally to $270.4 million and $393.3 million overseas.

Wicked 2 and Zootopia 2 are combining for a giant Thanksgiving box office — not record-breaking but still huge,” Gross wrote. “The lineup is similar to last year’s (Wicked and Moana 2), and it’s putting the last two Thanksgivings ahead of pre-pandemic Thanksgivings.”

A24’s afterlife romance Eternity, starring Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller and Callum Turner, bowed to an estimated $5.2 million over the extended weekend, including $3.1 million across the traditional three-day window.

Netflix’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, again starring Daniel Craig as the Southern detective Benoit Blanc, generated a reported $4 million across limited theatrical distribution — in line with the streamer’s legacy indifference to the theatrical window. The movie launches on Netflix Dec. 12.

“Netflix isn’t interested in box office,” wrote Gross. “This release is done for the filmmakers, who want to see their movie on the big screen.”

The analyst contends Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” franchise has been hurt by the director’s decision to exit Lionsgate and deliver two sequels to Netflix for a reported $450 million.

“Netflix doesn’t have the operation, expertise or leverage to mount a studio release — to get the right screens, fine-tune the media buy, roll out the social publicity, etc. It can’t be outsourced, so this is it,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s Now You See Me, Now You Don’t added $10 million in North American ticket sales, upping its global tally to $187 million worldwide, including $50 million domestically and $137.3 million overseas.

Paramount’s The Running Man, starring Glen Powell in a reboot of the 1987 original starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, grossed an estimated $5.5 million over the extended holiday period. Of this total, the film earned about $3.7 million from Nov. 28-30. The movie added $1.1 million on Nov. 29 across 64 international markets with the total weekend gross of $3.1 million. The international total now stands at $26.3 million.

Regretting You grossed an estimated $705,000 from 741 locations over the extended holiday period, upping its global tally near $90 million, including near $50 million domestically.

Disney’s ‘Zootopia 2’ Jumpstarts Thanksgiving Weekend Box Office With $19.7 Million, ‘Wicked: For Good’ Tops $253 Million Globally

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ sequel Zootopia 2 topped the Thanksgiving box office with $19.7 million in North American ticket sales.

The movie, which features a vocal cast that includes Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman and Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan, among others, has already generated $81 million at the global box office since its Nov. 25 sneak preview release, including $40 million domestically.

Zootopia 2 could be headed for respective three-day weekend and five-day Thanksgiving holiday grosses of $101 million and $161 million, according to estimates from BoxOfficeReport.com.

“That would represent the second-largest Thanksgiving weekend opening ever (behind only Moana 2 and well ahead of 2013’s Frozen),” analyst Daniel Garris wrote in a post.

The original Zootopia (2016) generated a $75 million opening weekend on the way to a global box office haul topping $1 billion.

After Zootopia 2, A24 romantic comedy Eternity is the lone newcomer, starring Miles Teller, Elizabeth Olsen and Callum Turner. The movie is expected to gross upwards of $3.3 million through Nov. 30.

Meanwhile, last weekend’s box office champ, Universal Pictures’ Wicked: For Good, has topped $253 million at the global office, and is expected to add three-day weekend and five-day Thanksgiving holiday grosses of $81.17 million and $118.27 million, respectively.

Box office returnees include Lionsgate’s Now You See Me: Now You Don’t ($7.5 million and $10.8 million over three-day and five-day periods, respectively), 20th Century Studios’ Predator: Badlands ($4.9 million/$7 million) and Paramount reboot The Running Man with $4.1 million and $6 million, respectively.

Finally, Searchlight Pictures’ Rental Family, starring Oscar winner Brendan Fraser, is projected to sell $2.5 million in second-weekend ticket sales, upping its overall tally to $8 million.
