Paramount Pictures’ kids-friendly Sonic the Hedgehog 2 <\/em>bounded out of the gate to generate an estimated $71 million in opening box office weekend revenue across more than 4,200 screens through April 10. The tally trounces the previous benchmark set by the movie’s predecessor, Sonic the Hedgehog<\/em>, which tallied $58 million in its opening three-days in pre-COVID 2020.<\/p>\n

Also helping the video game adaptation was excellent social media buzz, including an “A” on CinemaScore, a 97% approval on Rotten Tomatoes, and 74% rating on Comscore’s PostTrack metric, as well as Spring Break release.<\/p>\n

The opening for Sonic 2<\/em> (featuring again the voice of Ben Schwartz as Sonic, and Jim Carey playing Dr. Ivo Robotnik) bodes well for the franchise, as well as Paramount, which now has four No. 1 North American box office openers in 2022, including The Lost City, Scream <\/em>and Jackass Forever<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Sonic 2<\/em> easily bested Universal Pictures’ Michael Bay-directed actioner Ambulance<\/em>, co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal, which only saw an estimated $8 million in ticket sales \u2014 well below previous conservative estimates around $14 million.<\/p>\n
