Discovery, co-CEO Ted Sarandos said the streamer has no interest in dismantling the media giant&#8217;s legacy brands, including HBO and Warner Bros. Studios, into amorphous Netflix content engines.<\/p>\n<p>The executive, along with co-CEO Greg Peters, headlined the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in New York City, fielding myriad questions about the pending $72 billion transaction, including how Netflix would absorb a Hollywood pioneer.<\/p>\n<p>Sarandos said the acquisition would put Netflix firmly in the theatrical business for the first time \u2014 a position the streamer heretofore largely ignored, opting instead to release original feature films direct-to-consumers, much to the chagrin of exhibitors and some directors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have not talked a lot about [theatrical] in the past \u2026 because we&#8217;ve never been in that business. And when this deal closes, we are in that business, and we&#8217;re going to do it,&#8221; Sarandos said.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, that means adhering to the traditional theatrical distribution model, including 45-day release windows. Sarandos said Warner&#8217;s box office hits this year would have had the same exhibition schedule under Netflix.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If we did this deal 24 months ago, all of those movies we saw this year do so well at the box office for Warner Bros. would have been released in the same way in theaters by us,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I&#8217;m talking about <em>A Minecraft Movie<\/em>. I&#8217;m talking about <em>Superman<\/em>. I&#8217;m talking about <em>Weapons, Sinners<\/em>, <em>The Conjuring \u2026 <\/em>these movies will be released on Netflix through theaters \u2026 with the Warner Bros. operating entity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The five movies collectively generated $2.7 billion at the global box office, including $1.38 billion across North American screens.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We think it&#8217;s really important the way that [Warner Bros.] creates and the way that they drive value. We didn&#8217;t buy this company to destroy that value,&#8221; Sarandos said.<\/p>\n<p>The same mindset goes for the 50-year-old HBO brand, which Peters said remains an enduring consumer brand.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It speaks prestige TV,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We want to double down on that concept.
