Among them is Carol Sturka (Rhea Seehorn from Gilligan’s “Breaking Bad” spinoff “Better Call Saul”), a fantasy romance novelist from Albuquerque who doesn’t seem to be able to find the joy in anything, even her own success.

She immediately reacts with repulsion toward the hive, whom she refers to as the “Others,” because it also absorbed the memories of her partner, who subsequently died as a result of the joining.

The hive, on the other hand, presents itself as a benevolent new era for humanity and a savior of planet Earth, since without individual impulses there is no more war, no crime, no disparity in wealth, and no strife in general. Everyone appears happy and eager to please, and they vow to tend to all the needs of the immune individuals, some of whom seize upon the opportunity to upgrade their lifestyle.

Carol would prefer not to be dependent upon them, a position she quickly realizes is problematic given how they now control all of the world’s resources. When Carol meets with others who are immune, she is shocked to learn they don’t mind that the hive as seized control of the planet. Most of them have family members absorbed by the hive but refuse to believe they have been fundamentally changed. Some would even prefer to join the hive, which explains it has a biological imperative to eventually convert all the immune individuals once it understands how to “fix” them.

Undeterred, Carol begins to investigate the possibilities of reversing the joining before they can assimilate her, holding out hope she can eventually sway some of the remaining individuals to her side.

Marketing for “Pluribus” — an obvious reference to E pluribus unum, the U.S. motto that is Latin for “out of many, one” — gave it a logline of being about “the most miserable person on Earth who must save the world from happiness,” an apt description that doesn’t quite do justice to the profound nature of the philosophical underpinnings of the show.

Gilligan, who cut his teeth in the industry as a writer on “The X-Files,” has happened upon a premise that could serve as an allegory for so many things — ranging from politics, economics, religion, morality, ethics, relationships and social structures, to internet culture and the rise of artificial intelligence — that it’s practically a Rorschach test for how each viewer wants to interpret it or extract meaning from it.

Carol is presented as the protagonist, certainly, but is depicted as so inherently unlikable that the show is practically daring people to root for the hive. But the situation itself, and some would say the inherent value of individual freedom over the collective, forces the viewer into Carol’s headspace, even those that may ostensibly not identify much with her. Even here the show is touching upon notions of overcoming political divisions to pursue common goals, a concept that comes more into focus by the finale of the first season’s nine episodes.

There’s a lot to unpack about human nature here, and while the series draws inspiration from the likes of “The Twilight Zone” and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, it’s more of a character drama than a sci-fi thriller. It’s an experience for the audience — perhaps even the ultimate thought experiment — as much as it is a narrative.

The effectiveness of the storytelling, as with any good sci-fi, is bound by the rules put in place to both explain and constrain the core plot device that drives the tale — in this case, the concept of a human hive mind.

The Others claim it is not in their nature to harm any living creature, including plants, which means they can only consume pre-existing food stocks or whatever happens to fall on the ground. Nor can the hive lie, but they can manipulate through the selective presentation of information (a side effect, Carol jokes, of all the lawyers joining). To serve as a liaison with Carol, the hive sends Zosia (Karolina Wydra), who was specifically selected because she most closely resembles the physical representation of Carol’s romantic ideal, an overt choice that would seem tailored to breaking down Carol’s resistance.

The Others see individuality as the disease, so their seeming willingness to indulge any desire from the immune 13 would be, from their perspective, akin to keeping a suffering patient comfortable.

Their behavior and decisions would seem to defy some obvious logic about what an actual hive mind would do in this situation — not only in regards to agriculture, but also why they would bother to expend considerable resources not only to try to convert the 13 remaining individuals, but placate them in the interim, when such actions would seem to run counter to the hive’s other stated needs and desire for efficiency. However, there is enough leeway in the hive virus being alien in nature to explain away what could otherwise be seen as logical fallacies in their behavior. And such quirks only add to the philosophical analysis of the show.

It’s a fascinating dichotomy. One might think a multitude of mutually exclusive opinions and incompatible cultures might present a barrier to a functioning hive mind. Yet, as portrayed on the show, the Others have seemingly overcome this, most likely compartmentalizing differing opinions and interpretations as subsets of the relevant topics. While this gives the hive the cumulative total of human knowledge, it eliminates any sense of culture, and reduces the capacity for nuance, critical thought, innovation and creativity.

One key moment that highlights the seeming contradictions at the center of the hive takes place in episode eight, as the hive expresses excitement over the prospect of Carol writing a new novel they can enjoy, even as they continue their efforts to eliminate the individuality that gives her the capacity for invention.

A big strength of the show is the way it toys with audience expectations by exploiting the conventions of genre. The depiction of the joining in the first episode plays like a horror movie, filled with uncertainty accompanied by foreboding music, until the tension is broken with moments of levity as the hive tries to explain the situation to Carol. Another major reveal midway through the season would seem to play on other tropes that are almost immediately subverted — thanks to one of several fun cameos layered throughout the season — because this isn’t that kind of show.

Some of the potency of the plot twists, however, might depend on how the series is digested. It was originally presented by Apple TV on a weekly basis, though some episodes were available early to avoid holidays. This created a flood of buzz around the show as fan theories were debated on the internet for a week until that next episode arrived, which answered some questions and spurred more conjecture. And the aforementioned mid-season reveal left a doozy of an impact on fans, who had to wait more than a week for the resolution. The anticipation for the next episode became palpable, even as some viewers decided the pacing of the later episodes was too slow for their liking (a perception a true binge would probably help overcome).

The stage is set for what should be an intriguing second season, though fans will have to be patient in that regard. The slow pace of the show’s production means it likely won’t be ready for a couple years. But knowing Gilligan’s track record, it should be worth the wait.

Subscribe HERE to the FREE Media Play News Daily Newsletter!

STREAMING REVIEW: Apple TV; Sci-Fi Drama; Not rated; Stars Rhea Seehorn, Karolina Wydra, Carlos-Manuel Vesga, Miriam Shor, Samba Schutte, Menik Gooneratne, Darinka Arones.
