Writer-director Craig Brewer\u2019s Song Sung Blue<\/em> presents the story of a pair of performers who find love through the allure of the spotlight and the drive to entertain.<\/p>\n

Inspired by a true story, Song Sung Blue<\/em> is based on a 2008 documentary of the same name by Greg Kohs about Mike and Claire Sardina, who form a Neil Diamond tribute band that becomes popular in the Milwaukee area in the 1990s.<\/p>\n

The subject was a natural fit for Brewer, whose projects are often built around an element of music of some sort, offering the flavor of a Diamond biopic without actually being about him.<\/p>\n

Hugh Jackman stars as Mike, a Vietnam vet and recovering alcoholic who performs under the name Lightning. He becomes smitten with Claire (Kate Hudson), a Patsy Cline impersonator, when they are both booked to play at the Wisconsin State Fair, and she suggests he resembles Neil Diamond. They become romantically involved after he dubs her Thunder and proposes that she join him in creating \u201ca Neil Diamond experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

They get married, and soon after their act begins to take off, even getting a chance to open for Pearl Jam. With each having children from a previous marriage, their success brings a measure of stability to their blended family. That bliss is soon threatened by tragedy, requiring them to rediscover their love of music to fuel the strength needed to persevere.<\/p>\n

Despite some heavy story developments, Song Sung Blue<\/em> is easy to digest thanks to some energetic music and the reliable presence of Jackman and Hudson, who was nominated for an Oscar for her performance. The film\u2019s home entertainment presentation includes extended musical sequences from Jackman and Hudson singing \u201cCrunchy Granola Suite\u201d and \u201cSweet Caroline.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other bonus materials include an informative commentary with Brewer, and three behind-the-scenes featurettes that run about 19 minutes total.<\/p>\n

The 10-minute \u201cLightning in a Bottle\u201d looks at the production in general, while the three-minute \u201cEye for Style\u201d delves into the film\u2019s costumes, and the five-minute \u201cOne Plus One Equals Three\u201d offers Jackman and Hudson reminiscing about characters’ love story.<\/p>\n
