Google\u2019s subscription streaming video service YouTube Red is expanding service to 100 countries \u2013 three years after launching in 2015, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki told a technology confab.<\/p>\n
The $9.99 service is currently available in Australia, Mexico, New Zealand and South Korea, in addition to the U.S.<\/p>\n
Speaking Feb. 12 at Recode\u2019s Code Media confab in Huntington Beach, Calif., Wojcicki reiterated the video service \u2013 unlike Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hulu \u2013 is targeting music subscribers. Last year, the service inked license deals with Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment.<\/p>\n
\u201cYouTube Red is a service that is really a music service,\u201d Wojcicki said. \u201cWe have an amazing collection of music. We have all these music videos. And then on top of that it has the ability to watch all of YouTube ads free, with the background and offline services. And on top of that we\u2019ve actually been doing a number of YouTube Originals.\u201d<\/p>\n
Original programs include \u201cRyan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television,\u201d \u201cStep Up: High Water: Season 1,\u201d \u201cUltimate Expedition: Season 1,\u201d and \u201cFoursome,\u201d among others.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow that we\u2019ve finished all of our music deals, we\u2019re actually going to be expanding to a large number of countries,\u201d Wojcicki said, adding the service would roll out to 100 countries.<\/p>\n
