It was only a matter of time before the music biopic trend got to Bruce Springsteen.
Deliver Me From Nowhere is based on the 2023 book of the same name by Warren Zanes that chronicles Springsteen’s creation of his 1982 Nebraska album.
The film stars Jeremy Allen White as The Boss, who as the story begins has already achieved success touring with The E Street Band in the 1970s. Wrapping up a tour in 1981, Springsteen returns home to New Jersey to unwind, and begins writing a new batch of songs.
He records demo tapes of the songs, but becomes unsatisfied with attempts to perform them with the band. He prefers the rawness of the sound of the demo tapes, and insists those be released as his next album, causing concern at his record label due to the technical limitations of remastering the tapes to make them suitable for release.
Bruce’s obsession with the authenticity of his new album is interspersed with his struggles to come to grips with his newfound fame, reflections on a rough childhood with an abusive father (Stephen Graham), and a tumultuous love life.
White gives an engaging and energetic performance, but the film is otherwise a relatively formulaic portrait of artistic obsession. Springsteen’s most ardent fans should appreciate it the most.
The film’s home entertainment presentation includes the in-depth 34-minute production featurette “The Liner Notes — Making Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere,” which is presented in four parts. “Act 1: From Book to Screen” looks at how Zanes’ book inspired the filmmakers; “Act 2: Beyond the Music” explores the unique legacy of the Nebraska album; “Act 3: Becoming Bruce Springsteen” delves into White’s performance; and “Act 4: Deep Authenticity” focuses on the New Jersey setting.
